Northampton, MA – Yum! Brands Inc., the world’s largest restaurant company, has joined the growing list of companies and governmental agencies who’ve enlisted the products of Conserval Engineering to take their energy saving efforts to the next level. Yum! Brands did it by utilizing Conserval’s patented SolarWall® solar air heating and ventilation system on a newly constructed KFC/Taco Bell in Northampton, MA. Kentucky Fried Chicken (KFC) and Taco Bell are among Yum! Brands’ segment-leading restaurant properties.

SolarWall is a solar air heating technology that uses the sun’s energy to heat ventilation air as it is introduced into the interiors of commercial and industrial buildings. The system, which counts perforated metal exterior wall panels as its most prominent component, has been shown to substantially reduce heating costs and carbon dioxide emissions. The system is also virtually maintenance free and lasts upwards of 30 years.

The system utilized for the KFC/Taco Bell restaurant in Northampton is expected to displace more than nine tons of carbon dioxide from the atmosphere and produce approximately 100 million BTUs of thermal energy per year. If those projections hold true, the system will have displaced more than 270 tons of carbon dioxide during its 30-year life.

“This latest effort is a testament to the commitment we place on implementing environmentally-friendly solutions and continued research in the field of green technology,” said Jonathan Balas, LEED AP, KFC Project Architect.

“In an era where a lot of companies are talking green, Yum! Brands is walking green,” remarked Duncan Coutts, VP of Worldwide Sales at Conserval. “Yum!’s incorporation of solar into one of their facilities highlights how they are putting environmental objectives directly into action and showcasing to the public how CO2 reductions are achievable with the design of smart buildings.”
