February 1, 2011 — The inventors of the highly acclaimed SolarWall® air heating technology are preparing to launch their highly anticipated NightSolar® system. This duel action roof-mounted system will still provide day-time heating, but can now also be used in reverse from sunset to sunrise for nighttime cooling; chilling incoming air by as much as 10 F (5 C) below ambient air temperature. The ability of one technology to generate both heating and cooling energy for buildings represents a tremendous technological achievement that will produce substantial year-round energy savings.
This newly patented NightSolar® technology is based on the original SolarWall® system, which established the global standard for heating ventilation air in commercial and industrial buildings, and is currently being used in thousands of applications around the world.
The first NightSolar® demonstration project is currently being installed on a data processing building at an Army base in southern USA. The system will be monitored and the cooling benefit from this full scale system is expected to exceed the cooling achieved from prototypes tested at the National Solar Test Facility over the past two years.
The NightSolar® system will connect to the rooftop air handlers and air conditioning units and is expected to supply a significant portion of the cooling requirements for buildings in warm dry climates during the night. The technology is based on the Nocturnal Radiation principle which relies on a warmer body radiating heat to a colder surface, much like the sun radiating heat to earth during the day. At night the reverse happens when the warmer earth now radiates the solar heat back to the clear night sky which can be 40 degrees below zero.
The night cooling concept is well known to meteorologists and in agriculture, but this is the first example of it being successfully harnessed in a commercially viable technology.
